Arsenal opinion: Gunners must go for Djene Dakonam

According to Football Espana, Arsenal boss Unai Emery was present at the Mestalla to watch Getafe’s Togolese centre-half Djene Dakonam in action against Valencia.

Arsenal’s need for a new defender has been overly evident this season with the Gunners conceding 39 goals in the league, second worst in the top 7 so far this season.

Rob Holding’s long-term injury has forced Unai Emery to play Nacho Monreal out of position at centre-back this season. Skipper Laurent Koscielny will turn 34 soon and Shkodran Mustafi’s errors have cost the Gunners multiple times this season.

The Gunners can fill the void of new centre-back by signing Djene Dakonam this summer.

The 27-year-old has been phenomenal for Getafe so far this season and has a played a massive role in the club’s pursuit of Champions League football this season.

Getafe boast of the second best defence in the league ahead of both Barcelona and Real Madrid, having conceded just 24 goals all season.

Djene’s presence for the Azulones has been crucial and his partnership with Leandro Cabrera has been a joy to watch. The 27-year-old played as a defensive midfielder for a couple of games at the start of the season but has since returned to his natural role in the heart of the defence.

Standing at under 6 feet, Djene isn’t really the tallest for a centre-half but his pace and intelligence on the pitch more than make up for it. One of the biggest assets in his game is his tackling.

He is fantastic at breaking up the play and his willingness to get down and do the dirty work would be loved by the English fans.

Djene has also featured at right-back before in his career, an area where Arsenal could do with some help, especially with Emery using Shkodran Mustafi there a couple of times this season.

Djene’s versatility will surely come in handy especially for Emery, whose constant switching of formation needs players to adapt quickly.

Djene is very similar to former Arsenal legend Kolo Toure, thanks to his unorthodox and relentless style of defending combined with his quick pace and intelligence.

The Togolese defender’s ability to rush in to intercept balls will surely suit Emery’s style of play and his strength and power will help him adjust to the physicality of the Premier League without much difficulty.

Conclusion

Arsenal desperately need to invest in centre-backs in the summer and Djene Dakonam would be an incredibly smart addition to Unai Emery’s squad.

The Togolese’s style of defending will certainly receive a warm welcome at the Emirates and would be a fantastic partner to the likes of Sokratis and Koscielny in the heart of the defence.
