Arsenal Opinion – Why Arsenal should reignite their interest in Nicolas Tagliafico

According to a report in ESPN back in October, Premier League giants Arsenal were linked with a move for Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico.

The Argentine joined the Dutch side in the winter of 2018, and he was strongly linked with the Gunners ahead of the 2019 January window.

The 26-year-old has been a regular in the Ajax team and played for Argentina in the 2018 World Cup. Here’s why Arsenal should re-ignite their interest in the full-back and sign him in the summer window.

Gunners must solve left-back issues

Currently, Arsenal have Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac as their two options for the left-back position. While the former is now 33 years old, the latter hasn’t been a hit at the Emirates since joining them in the summer of 2017.

Nicolas Tagliafico

In general, the Gunners have been susceptible at the back, and their left-hand side of the defence has been prone to unforced errors. Both Kolasinac and Monreal are good going forward, but they tend to get caught on the counter, leaving the centre-backs exposed in two-vs-two situations at the back.

Hence, it makes sense for them to spend a good amount of money on a left-back, as they aim to get better under Unai Emery in the coming seasons. Nicolas Tagliafico would be an ideal answer to their woes.

The Argentine is a left-back who can play as a wide centre-back and perform well in both positions. As a full-back, he likes to go forward and help the attacks but he is much better when it comes making recovery runs and aiding the defence without possession.

In 18 Eredivisie appearances this season, the 26-year-old has made key passes at a rate of 1.6, made tackles and interceptions at an average of 2.2 each. He is also good when it comes to winning aerial duels, part of the reason why he can play as a wide centre-back. (Whoscored.com)

All in all, Tagliafico would be a proper upgrade on what Arsenal have at left-back.

Conclusion

Keeping all the above-mentioned facts in mind, it’s easy to see why the Gunners should spend money on signing the Ajax left-back in the summer window.

Apparently, Real Madrid are also interested in signing him. Hence, the north Londoners will have to act fast and beat the European champions to get their man.
