Arsenal opinion: Emery wants Thomas Partey – a good move?

Football.London has reported that Arsenal and Manchester United are interested in making a move for Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey, as Unai Emery looks to add reinforcements.

What has brought both Manchester United and Arsenal to the 25-year-old is the fact that he only as a €50million release clause, according to Marca.

It was reported to be €80million, which came with the new deal that he signed, but Spanish news outlet Marca has revealed that it’s only around €50million. For Arsenal, it represents a deal that the club should make in the near future, as they look regain stability.

Now a tougher league with the emergence of Tottenham, the Gunners have seen themselves fall out of the top four in recent seasons. However, under Unai Emery, Arsenal are doing relatively well and currently sit in fourth place.

They are only one point behind 3rd-placed Tottenham but do have both Manchester United and Chelsea hot on their heels. But despite all the positives in their season, Arsenal have issues. They need defensive steel in their side despite adding Lucas Torriera and Matteo Guendouzi in the summer.

Both stars have done well but there is only so much they can do. Adding someone like Thomas Partey will add that steel and more importantly, his no-nonsense style of play will be perfect.

While he has been at Atletico Madrid all his career, the 25-year-old only started flourishing last season for the Los Rojiblancos. He finished last season with 50 appearances to his name, playing a massive role in Atletico Madrid winning the Europa League.

More importantly, Partey has everything to flourish in the Premier League. The stamina to play high-octane football, the passing ability to excel as a midfielder and the defensive brain that has made him one of the best destroyers in the La Liga.

A defensive wall, Partey doesn’t do too much offensively but can move the ball around well. That’s what Arsenal need at the moment and his versatility to play as a right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield, adds to his value.

Conclusion

Arsenal have missed that midfield destroyer, a physical presence in the middle of the field since Patrick Vieira left the club. While Lucas Torriera has been absolutely brilliant this season for Arsenal, he cannot do everything no matter how much fans want him to.

Pairing the Uruguayan with someone like Thomas Partey, will help Arsenal and Torriera in the long run.
