Arsenal signing this 21-year-old prodigy for free would be a cost-effective way of replacing Petr Cech

Arsenal opinion: Should the Gunners make a move for Markus Schubert?

According to the Independent, Arsenal are back in the race for Bundesliga star Markus Schubert. The Gunners need a new pair of hands in their goal with the club losing Petr Cech.

The Premier League veteran has called time on his rather illustrious career, and will finish with the most number of clean sheets in the top-tier’s history.

It’s a stunning record and one that makes it very hard for Arsenal to replace. A player that talented is a very expensive one to replace, which is why Arsenal need to go for someone younger and cheaper.

That’s where Markus Schubert enters the fray. He is just 21 years old but has a bright future. Schubert has done well with 2. Bundesliga side Dynamo Dresden and is available for free in the summer.

It’s arguably a great move and combined with his potential to grow even further, it makes it a no-brainer for Arsenal.

The Leicester Mercury earlier revealed that Arsenal have scouted him. Schubert made his debut as a 17-year-old and has since gone on to make just over 80 appearances for the club, keeping 19 clean sheets. It’s why Dresden tried so hard to keep him at the club but eventually failed according to Metro.

That’s why Arsenal need to make their move and given their goalkeeping status at the moment, the club needs new options. Cech’s retirement leaves Arsenal with just Bernd Leno. And the German is the club’s undisputed number one and will hold that title at least the next few years.

However, behind him, Arsenal have next to no one helping them out, with Emiliano Martinez and hopefully, David Ospina the only options. The Colombian has been linked with a move to Napoli over the last few months, with Arsenal even giving the Serie A side a deadline to complete the move.

That leaves them with just Martinez and now at the age of 27, he is not a player they can depend on. Once upon a time, the Argentine had the potential to become a first-team star but now things have changed. While he could be a reliable back-up, Emiliano Martinez isn’t a first-team option.

Conclusion

Arsenal need a star to replace Petr Cech and while Leno is a wonderful first choice, their backups are less than interesting. It’s exactly why someone like Markus Schubert can help out and given how talented the German is, with time, he can become just what the club need.
