Arsenal beating Man City to land this £26m Spaniard would be a great statement of intent from Unai Emery

Arsenal opinion – Should Emery must beat Man City to sign Alex Grimaldo?

According to a report in the Sun, Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester City are leading the race to sign Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo. The £26million-rated Spaniard has been in great form this season and was voted February’s best defender in the Portuguese league.

His incredible displays have led to interests from many clubs across Europe. It will be tough for Benfica to keep hold of their highly talented star (h/t Sun).

As per the report (h/t Sport), Arsenal and City are neck and neck in the race to sign the 23-year-old. Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Inter Milan are also said to be interested in the player.

Here’s why the Gunners should beat the Cityzens to the signature of Alex Grimaldo:

Arsenal need a solid option at left-back

Currently, Unai Emery’s men have Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac as the two options for the left-back spot. While the former is reaching the twilight of his career at 33 years of age, the latter is not a very secure left-back asset.

Hence, it would make sense if Arsenal make a move for a new left-back in the summer. And having the services of Alex Grimaldo from the start of next season would be ideal.

The Benfica man has had a terrific season at left-back. He has scored four goals and supplied six assists in 26 league appearances so far. The 23-year-old is very good at making tackles and interceptions, doing so at the rate of 1.7 each per game.

Furthermore, the Spaniard’s runs up the field is a threat to the opposition as he can dribble past defenders and deliver dangerous balls into the box.

Conclusion

Everything points towards a conclusion that the Gunners would be better off spending money on getting Alex Grimaldo in the summer. They might have to be proactive in the market, otherwise, Manchester City can take him away.
