Back in 2017, a report from the Sky Sports had claimed that Tottenham were looking at then Atalanta star Andrea Conti as a replacement for Kyle Walker. But a move didn’t materialise and the Italian, instead, went on to sign for AC Milan in the summer of 2017.
Ever since recovering from his knee injury last year, Andrea Conti, 25, has struggled to find playing time under two different managers at AC Milan. He has played only two Serie A games so far this season, with recently-sacked Marco Giampaolo preferring Davide Calabria ahead of him at right-back.
AC Milan will face Lecce later this week and it will be the first game for new manager Stefano Pioli. Conti will try to impress the new manager and regain his spot in the team. Nevertheless, Tottenham should reignite their interest in the Italian when the transfer window reopens.
Kieran Trippier joined Atletico Madrid in the summer, leaving only Serge Aurier and 22-year-old Kyle Walker-Peters in the position. Aurier has featured three times for Spurs in the Premier League this season, providing one assist and receiving a red card.
The Ivory Coast international has not necessarily lived up to his price tag but Mauricio Pochettino may be hesitant to let Aurier leave in January given his lack of options at right-back. Yet, it is clear Tottenham need a new right-back as a replacement for the departed Trippier as Walker-Peters still needs time to become a regular starter at the club.
With that in mind, Spurs should make a move for Andrea Conti. He has not had a great time at AC Milan ever since he arrived from Atalanta, as he has been ravaged by two knee injuries.
The Italian is an attacking right-back with good technique, passing range and crossing ability. He is agile, energetic and has nimble footwork to weave his way past defenders along the flanks.
Add to that his innate ability to find passes in the final third, as well as the versatility to operate at wing-back, Conti would be a solid signing for Tottenham. Bringing in the former Atalanta man makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons as he can certainly make an immediate impact in north London.
Thus, Tottenham should not hesitate to go all out to sign Conti in January in a bid to save themselves from a miserable season.
