According to a report from The Sun, Tottenham are interested in signing Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana to replace Hugo Lloris.
Andre Onana, 23, has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe with consistent performances for Ajax over the last couple of years. The Cameroonian, formerly of the Barcelona academy, has been a regular fixture in goal for Ajax. So far this season, he has already racked up 27 appearances across all competitions.
The report adds that Ajax will sell Onana if an offer in the region of £30million to £35million is made. Keeping that in mind, Spurs must go all out to sign the goalkeeper in January.
Hugo Lloris’ form for Spurs has been worrying in recent years, with the French World Cup winner making high-profile blunders last season. He is currently sidelined with a horrific elbow injury suffered during Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Brighton in October.
Lloris, soon to be 33, isn’t getting any younger and it would be wise for Tottenham to line up his replacement. Paulo Gazzaniga has deputised in goal since Lloris’ injury but the Argentinean doesn’t really look like the man to help Spurs win trophies under Jose Mourinho.
Thus, it’s important for Mourinho to reinforce his backline in January and that should start with the goalkeeping department.
Andre Onana would be a smart signing for Tottenham and their fans would have seen the Ajax goalkeeper at close quarters last season when he played against them in the Champions League semi-final.
The Cameroon international can pass the ball accurately and is not afraid to play out from the back. He has decent reflexes and is an excellent shot-stopper.
Standing at 6ft 3in, he commands the box very well and has a safe pair of hands, to say the least. The 23-year-old’s stock has risen in recent years and one could get a glimpse of his shot-stopping ability as well as distributions skills in the video below.
With Lloris ageing and Gazzaniga not up to the standard required to play for Spurs, Mourinho could undoubtedly use some quality in goal by signing Onana in January.
At the age of 23, the Cameroon international has a long way to go in his career and could improve under the Spurs boss. All in all, he would be an upgrade over Lloris and could help Spurs compete for trophies.
