The Express (h/t Calciomercato) have reported that Manchester United are still in the race for AC Milan star Davide Calabria. The 22-year-old full-back has seen a steady rise into Gennaro Gattuso’s first-team, making 25 appearances this season, including 19 in the Serie A.
While his performances have come under stick of late, with the Italian full-back struggling to make a larger impact, he still remains as one of their best prospects.
An a-typical Italian defender, Calabria is very solid at the back and has more than enough in his locker to play either at left-back or right-back. Moreover, his offensive abilities are rather impressive, with him averaging a passing accuracy of 84.2% according to Whoscored.
For Manchester United, that’s exactly what they need and while Calabria isn’t as attack-minded as most full-backs, he can hold his own going forward.
The Red Devils did add Diogo Dalot over the summer and while the 19-year-old has come into his own under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they have no bonafide back-up.
Both Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian have failed to make an impact under the caretaker boss and the former is set to depart the club too.
Moreover, Darmian’s deal is set to expire in the summer. This would leave them with just one bonafide right-back in Dalot and a versatile Ashley Young, who is capable of playing on either side.
The latter is 33 years old and won’t get any younger going forward, which means that Calabria’s presence would be a god-send if a move does take place.
But the Italian is far from the finished article and though he would improve under new management, Calabria could take some time to adjust to the Premier League if a move does take place.
The Rossoneri, unlike Manchester United, do have two bonafide options in Andrea Conti and Davide Calabria. While Ignazio Abate is also available, the Italian is 32-years-old and despite not being a long-term option, he’s still made 19 appearances this season.
