Sheffield United tying down this 25-year-old star to fresh terms would be an excellent step – Agreed?

Why a new deal for John Lundstram is a right move by Sheffield United

According to The star, Chris Wilder has issued an update over John Lundstram’s contract situation, suggesting that talks are going on with the midfielder regarding a new deal at Bramall Lane.

Lundstram, 25, started his career in Everton’s youth academy but never made it beyond that to break into the first-team. After a series of loan spells, he shifted alliance with Oxford United on a free transfer. After two seasons with the Yellows, Sheffield United bought him in 2107.

Though he was not a big-game player, he managed to play 36 Championship games for the Blades in his first season. The following season saw a downfall in his career and he was not expected to be a part of the team that would play in the Premier League this season.

Chris Wilder has made the habit of awakening talents that has slipped into the shadows and he was there when Lundstram needed the break. And at the time of lacking big talents, the Blades boss made use of one, who had started just 5 matches in the second-ties prior to this season.

The ex-Oxford man has become a key component to Wilder’s side and has started featured in all of the 17 games so far. He was more of a defender but he then transformed himself into a box-to-box midfielder, as he can be seen all over the pitch in United’s games.

He has also made sure of improving himself in other areas too and his 4 goals in the league prove that Wilder has turned him into a complete modern-day footballer. From being an outcast to controlling the team’s game, Lundstram has become a central figure at Bramall Lane.

The 25-year-old has come a long way from his Everton days and was instrumental in Sheffield United’s 3-3 draw against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side when the two teams met each other last month.

After the departure of Mark Duffy, the Blades were changed from a 3-4-1-2 formation to 3-5-2 this season with Lundstram taking centre stage in the middle of the park. This has been successful for the side and they are fighting for a top-six finish in the Premier League.

The Liverpool-born midfielder has been a strong man to move with his muscular presence on the field and his transition in different phases of a game has been a highlight so far. He could be useful for Wilder when they enter into the tougher festive period.

Verdict

He would be entering into the final six months of his contract with the club when January arrives and it would be wise by the hierarchy to make quick decisions over his contract before he changes his mind.

With his presence and being a key member, Lundstarm can be trusted with the duties of seeing his team qualify to play in Europe next season. Therefore, Sheffield United must boost his confidence with a new contract at the earliest.
