Why A Loan Deal For This Arsenal Star Would Be The Best For The Club And The Player

Share

Arsene Wenger’s focus at present should be on how to strengthen his defensive line and for that purpose the Arsenal boss will look to sign quite a few players in the summer transfer window. The French manager has the funds to add highly talented stars to his squad and has a long list of defenders that he has been keeping tabs on, with the intent of bringing them to the Emirates and winning some major titles in the upcoming campaign.

However, it becomes quite important not just to buy new stars, but also to retain the players in the current squad, which is something Wenger has not been able to do over the years, losing his big stars time and time again. The Gunners have been selling off their high quality players over the years, though a few seasons ago the Frenchman had ensured the fans that ‘Arsenal was not a selling club anymore’.

Despite that, one player who really needs to be sent away on loan for the time being, will be England international Calum Chambers. The former Southampton man, who made an impressive start to his career in north London, has failed to impress in recent times.

The 21 year old defensive superstar looked really mature, when he first joined Arsenal, though that composure has now disappeared completely. The youngster has made a total of 35 appearances for the Londoners, scoring once, since joining them back in 2014.

It would still not be wise to sell him, as he is very young and can be an asset to the club in the future. The best option would be for Wenger to send him away on loan, to develop his skills by playing regular football elsewhere.

Chambers has barely featured in the side in the center-back position, as he is behind Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker for that role. Further, Hector Bellerin is the first choice right back and Chambers has barely featured due to that, expect a few times maybe in the cup tie.

He has not been able to impress in the defensive midfield role as well and has been all over the pitch in the few games when he has featured in that position. Chambers has been quite irresponsible and sometimes loose on the ball in promising areas, and therefore, consistency is still a major issue for him.

Wenger does need a backup for the Spaniard, but if he actually wants young Chambers to grow into a top player someday, he can’t expect the Englishman to just play second fiddle to Bellerin and waste his talent on the bench. It would be rather advisable to get another experienced right-back for that purpose, who would be willing to do so and can also provide a competition for places within the squad.
