Who is Milad Mohammadi? All you need to know about Rangers’ new target

Scottish giants Rangers are interested in signing Iranian full-back Milad Mohammadi, as per reports from the Scottish Sun

The Gers, under new manager Steven Gerrard, have already made as many as nine signings this summer, following the recent arrivals of Umar Sadiq and Lassana Coulibaly on temporary deals. But the Liverpool legend remains keen on bolstering his squad further and is reportedly eyeing a move for the versatile full-back.

The 24-year old, who earned fame overnight during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, plies his trade for Akhmat Grozny in the Russian Premier League.

Having previously turned out for Damash Teh, Niroye Zamini and Rah Ahan back in his homeland, Mohammadi moved to the Russian outfit in the summer of 2016 and has gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular.

In his two seasons in Russia, the Iran international featured in 52 games across all competitions, scoring two goals and setting up five more. Last season, the defender made 24 appearances across competitions, chalking up a solitary assist.

Mohammadi has 21 international caps for Iran and made two substitute appearances in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. He is yet to open his goalscoring account for his nation.

The 24-year-old is primarily a left-back, who can also play either as a right-back or as a winger on either flank. Thus, he extremely versatile and flexible, meaning he will be a valuable asset to the Gers.

Possessing a decent amount of pace, the Iranian also has good dribbling abilities and a keen eye for a pass, making him quite a handy player to have in the ranks.

Rangers have a number of options in the full-back areas with Jon Flanagan joining this summer. Besides the new arrival, they also have captain James Tavernier, Declan John and Lee Hodson.

However, with the latter’s future at the club far from certain and Lee Wallace’s time at the Ibrox nearing an end, it makes sense for Gerrard and to add more bodies in the full-back department.

Mohammadi would prove to be a solid backup for Tavernier at right-back, and he can also deputize for John and Flanagan out on the left side. And if need be, he can also play as an attacker from the wide areas to provide cover for the likes of Jamie Murphy, Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias.

The 24-year-old might not be the most well-known player around, but signing him would provide Rangers with the necessary depth as they aim to mount a serious title challenge.
