According to reports in Chronicle Live, Championship club Sheffield United are interested in signing Sunderland skipper George Honeyman in the January transfer window. The Blades manager Chris Wilder is aiming to strengthen his squad in winter, such that it helps the team push for an unlikely Premier League promotion. They are currently third in the table with 29 points, one behind leaders Leeds United.
Honeyman’s contract with the Black Cats end next summer, however, there is an option to extend that by a year. As such, they are not risking to lose their academy product on a free transfer next summer if they do not sell him in January.
The 24-year-old attracted interest from Sheffield Wednesday over the summer, but the player showed his willingness to work at the Stadium of Light and impress manager Jack Ross. The gaffer in return handed him the captaincy role.
He is a quality player who possesses abundant attributes at his disposal. Here’s everything you need to know about the player:
Born in Northumberland, Honeyman joined the Sunderland academy at the age of 10. He made his professional debut on 15th February 2015 in an FA Cup fifth-round tie. He was loaned out to Gateshead in October of the same year, to follow the footsteps of fellow Black Cats’ youngster Lynden Gooch.
On January 2017, he featured for Sunderland in their FA Cup game against Burnley. Manager David Moyes said that Honeyman was one of the positives from the game which they lost 2-0. He then scored his goal for the club on 10th August 2017 in a 1-0 EFL Cup win.
During this season in the League One, the 24-year-old has scored two and provided two assists in 14 appearances. He is now the captain of a team, which is second in the league and pushing for Championship promotion.
Attribute-wise, Honeyman is a prodigious attacking midfielder who can play on either wing if required. He has a good eye for goal and goal-creating passes, making him an ever-present danger for the defenders.
If Sheffield United get him in the January window, Wilder can use him as one of the number 10s in the 3-4-2-1 formation. Hence, we can see why the Blades manager wants the player, as he intends to increase the squad count and simultaneously enhance the quality.
