According to a report in Metro, Arsenal are one of the many teams who are ready to battle it out to sign Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman. Everton, Celtic and Fulham are the other sides interested in the youngster.
The 22-year-old is under contract with the Magpies until the end of next season but the club are keen to cash in on him over the coming summer transfer window. The idea is to not let him become a free agent in the summer of 2020 without a profit. (h/t Metro)
While Arsenal would be looking to replace the soon-to-be-retiring Petr Cech, Fulham have struggled for consistency from their goalkeepers and Celtic would be needing another young option for the future.
Without further ado, let’s take a look about the player in a detailed scout report and conclude as to why he deserves to be linked with several clubs:
Woodman spent his youth years at Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, before signing a professional contract with the latter in 2014. Since then, he has been on loan out to various clubs in Scotland and England, getting few chances but impressing the onlookers.
He has represented England in every youth level, starting from U16 to U21. If we talk about this season, the 22-year-old has played three games for Newcastle, all of them coming in the FA Cup.
Woodman has won quite a few awards while playing for his national team. He was part of the England team that won the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and also the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup, where he won the Golden Glove.
In terms of his attributes, his height (6ft 3in) allows him to dive well and cover the large portion of the goal while doing that. It also allows him to be dominant in the air from crosses and command his six-yard area.
His distribution might still require some improvements but that can be done as goalkeepers have more longevity in football as compared to other players. Hence, at 22, Woodman is still young for a keeper.
While going through the scout report, we can see why clubs in the Premier League and also Celtic want to get the player on their side.
Freddie Woodman is a fantastic goalkeeper who has great potential to become a star in the next few years. His next club may decide the best bet for him.
