Who Is This Explosive Left-winger From The Championship That Arsenal Are Trying To Sign? Everything You Need To Know

Scout Report – Marcus Tavernier

Arsenal have been keeping a close eye on Middlesbrough starlet Marcus Tavernier. They are understood to have sent scouts to monitor the youngster and the reports have been positive enough to convince Arsene Wenger to make a move for the promising youngster. However, they will face competition as Everton are also keen on landing Tavernier in January.

Everton have quite a good track record of snapping up players from lower-league clubs having signed the likes of John Stones, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ademola Lookman but that should not deter the Gunners since they can truly benefit from Tavernier’s influence. The youngster’s contract at the Riverside Stadium expires next summer, and while the club could offer an extension, Tavernier could be tempted by the offers from Premier League clubs.

Let’s take a closer look at his profile.

History

Born in 1999 in Leeds, England, Tavernier has represented England at the U19 level and currently plays as a left-winger for Middlesbrough. Having previously played for Newcastle, Tavernier joined Middlesbrough’s academy at the U14 level and has established himself as a regular for the side. He has also played and impressed in two games for his club in the 2015–16 UEFA Youth League.

Tavernier made his debut for the club in a win against Scunthorpe United at home, which was only in August this year. He scored his first goal for Middlesbrough in a win against Bournemouth last month.

Playing Style

He has clearly burst onto the scene only recently but in this short space of time, the winger has impressed and has established himself as one of Championship’s most promising young attacking talents. A left-sided winger by nature, Tavernier possesses a lot of pace and power in his young legs and never shies away from letting his creativity shine through.

In fact, his attributes off the field have been quite splendid as well. Tavernier’s focus, drive and determination have enabled him to break into the Boro team ahead of players with more experience – and that itself is a true testament to his power on that front.

Tavernier’s Future

The youngster does have a host of Premier League clubs vying for his signature but the 18-year-old truly has a long way to go. His immediate focus should be on keeping his place in the Boro team and he cannot let his focus get affected by rumours of interest from the top-flight, even though it might seem enticing.

Having said that, there is no reason for Tavernier to rush things up. If he gets the offer and chooses to accept and join Arsenal, that will be great. However, if he chooses to stay back with Middlesbrough and spend more time playing there before moving to the Premier League, that will be a good idea too.
