Who is this 20-year-old upcoming Leicester starlet? The next big English talent in the Premier League?

Who is Leicester City starlet Hamza Choudhury? The next big English talent?

Leicester City starlet Hamza Choudhury is no more an unfamiliar name in the European market. The 20-year-old has risen through the ranks at Leicester City academy to feature in the first-team last term and huge credits to him for establishing himself in Claude Puel’s plans.

Choudhury made his first-team debut in the EFL Cup win over Liverpool last September and he went on to make a further eight Premier League appearances.

The midfielder was a part of Leicester’s pre-season training camp in Évian-les-Bains in France and should be heavily involved in the upcoming season.

With Choudhury succeeding in making an impact at the King Power Stadium last term, let us have a look at his complete profile.

Background

Choudhury, whose father is Grenadian and mother is of Bangladeshi descent, was born in England on 1st October 1997. He joined the Leicester Academy in 2011 and rose through the ranks very quickly. The midfielder became a regular in the Foxes’ U-18 side even before he turned 16.

In February 2016, Choudhury was loaned out to Burton Albion in the Football League One. The 20-year-old made an instant impact at Burton and was instrumental in the club’s promotion to the Championship. He took the League One by storm and after a successful loan spell with Burton, he extended his loan deal with the Brewers for the 2016/17 campaign.

It was this past season where Choudhury debuted for Leicester and impressed with his displays. In all, the youngster made nine appearances and his performances at the back end of the season saw him get called up to the England Under-21 side, where he featured in this summer’s Toulon tournament which England won.

Style of play

Choudhury, who sports a distinctive afro haircut, is an all-action central midfielder whose passing range and positional sense belie his age. For a player so young, his reading of the game is excellent and often positions himself in the right position to break up the opposition attacks.

The 20-year-old can also play as a deep-lying playmaker, the role he orchestrated during his Burton days. Choudhury possesses the ability to hit the long passes as well as make intricate passes through crowded areas. He is aggressive, tenacious, lively and is an excellent tackler who never shies away from flying down for a challenge.

One area where Choudhury can definitely improve on is his fitness level. Moreover, to make his name as a box-to-box midfielder in the future, he needs to be more dynamic and creative in his play. He is just 20 years old and will only improve with proper guidance.

What does the future hold?

Hamza Choudhury should spend more time with Leicester’s senior squad rather than the Under-23s this season. He is one of the most sublime talents the Leicester academy has produced in recent years and if the all-action midfielder continues his impressive form, there is every chance he could be in for an England call-up soon.
