Just days after accepting Crystal Palace’s £27 million offer for Christian Benteke, Liverpool seem intent on acquiring the services of Dutch and Ajax winger Anwar El Ghazi. The 21-year-old has caught the attention of several European clubs with his amazing performances in the 2015-16 season. However, Milan are thought to be the only serious contention for Liverpool at the moment. Liverpool are seriously considering the 21-year-old since Ajax are rumoured to value him at only £15 million, which is significantly low in the present transfer market.
Who is this Anwar El Ghazi?
Born in Holland but with Moroccan roots, El Ghazi was eligible to play for both Holland and Morocco. He chose the former after discussions with none other than Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. El Ghazi has been an instant hit even in the national team and has made two appearances so far. However, his performances with Ajax have been the true reason behind the transfer rumours.
On his debut season, El Ghazi came up with an astonishing eight assists and nine goals in 23 starts. His assist record has fallen down significantly for the previous campaign, but he continued his goal scoring form with 11 goals in 20 starts.
El Ghazi is yet to open his account this season, but he has one assist in 169 minutes of action so far. The player has averaged only around 76% in terms of pass accuracy, and it should be the only worry.
Liverpool seem well covered in the wings with players like Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane offering great width. Beyond these two names, Jurgen Klopp can also play the likes of Marco Grujic, Roberto Firmino, and Georginio Wijanldum in the wings. Klopp is certainly not short of options in this regard. However, a tempting price of £15 million for such a highly talented youngster cannot be passed lightly especially considering that Liverpool are most likely to sell Lazar Markovic before the transfer window shuts. He is unlikely to be a first-team regular from the start.
At 6ft 2in, he has the presence required to be a physical winger. El Ghazi could more be suited to replace Sadio Mane – should the summer signing be unavailable – since he favours to play on the right-wing. El Ghazi has the pace and skill that any winger should possess, but his physicality provides an added advantage. El Ghazi is able to go past people with ease and his crosses have been deadly.
