Who’s the versatile 29-year-old that Liverpool are trying to sing? Meet Jurgen Klopp’s attacking target

Scout Report – Alejandro Gomez

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a January move for Atalanta playmaker Alejandro Gomez. Although the Reds strode into the ongoing transfer window after having signed long-time target Virgil Van Dijk, they had to endure the loss of Philippe Coutinho.

The talented playmaker made his way to join Barcelona and that does leave Liverpool stretched for options. For any player to fill the void left behind by Coutinho will be quite tough but Gomez does seem like a solid option.

Considering how important he is for Atalanta, they might not be too happy about letting him leave but Liverpool do have quite a lot of funds in hand and they could use that to lure him to Anfield. Let’s take a closer look at his profile.

History

Born in 1988 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Gomez is a dual citizen of Argentina and Italy. He embarked on his football career playing for Argentine youth side Arsenal de Sarandi. He made his debut for them in 2003 and then established himself as a regular in the first-team about three years later.

It was back then that San Lorenzo de Almagro signed him. His high-profile attacking displays were understood to have attracted their attention and he spent a year there, before moving to Catania in 2010. Gomez stayed put for the next three years, during the course of which he became one of their key players.

That attracted the attention from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina and Inter Milan but Gomez chose to join Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv. He did not with them for long and finally made the decision to join Atalanta in 2014. His displays helped the club stay afloat in the Serie-A and he has been an instrumental member for them ever since.

Playing Style

Gomez is a naturally attack-oriented player, blessed with quick feet and an innate ability to find the back of the net. He is creative and boasts of a dynamic playing style, which often paves the way for some entertaining football. The player is abundantly talented and is renowned for his pace, movement and dribbling skills. His work rate is quite impressive as well and it is something that will be likely to attract Klopp. Gomez is also very versatile and can play across a number of attacking positions.

Gomez’s Future

At 29 years of age, it is highly likely that Gomez has hit his prime and he can truly work wonders if he were to join Liverpool. Under Klopp, the Reds have been revamped to play classy attacking football and the Argentine playmaker does seem like a flagbearer of the same.

He is likely to bring in quality and experience for the club and could act as a viable replacement for Coutinho. However, the Reds must bear in mind that he is unlikely to serve as a long-term option.
