What’s The Mata? 3 Reasons Why Manchester United Must Not Waste Money On A Creative Midfielder

Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United has stumbled and scraped their way throughout this season and have not been at their best playing style. Lucky victories and some individual standout performances have been the highlight of his tenure at Old Trafford. For the 150m spent in the summer, United are barely playing his style of philosophy. Now there is news about United wanting a Creative Midfielder. Here are three reasons why van Gaal mustn’t buy one:

1. What about Juan Mata?

The Spaniard attacking midfielder was the best in the Premier League in 2012-13 season before falling out of favor in Mourinho’s first season in his second spell. He has shown great decisiveness and consistency whenever played in his best position. He may not be the best in tracking back, but most creative midfielders lack in this department. When he has the ability to provide goals and assists at a seriously consistent rate, there should be ways to accommodate him in the team as a CAM. Van Gaal has been uncharacteristic in his use of tactics as he has used Rooney too deep and di Maria too forward. Also playing two out and out strikers together in Van Persie and Falcao, Man Utd have lacked balance on the offensive front. Using Mata in a playmaking role with Angel di Maria and maybe Young/Valencia in a trio behind Rooney would solve the issue.

2. Concentrate on defense, please.

There is no lack of creativity at Mancehster United. It is the way of playing which has been poor. van Gaal would need to step up as a manager. Long ball tactics and poor team chemistry aren’t the hallmarks of a top team. We are more or less sure that United would be back on track in terms of game play, meaning there wouldn’t be a need for a Creative Midfielder. But that money should rather be invested in a world class Center Back. Man Utd have been saved by their goalkeeper De Gea being in strong form, else their defense doesn’t invoke confidence.

3. Maybe spend on a top class winger?

Young and Valencia have been good, but not top class, Januzaj has been sketchy while Mata, Herrera and Rooney are not wingers. Only Di Maria is a world class player who can play wide as good as he plays centrally. The addition of a quality wide man would help the team improve their balance. Man Utd would get better deliveries into the box and also have more flair down both wings if they manage to play di Maria and another winger down the two flanks. Another creative midfielder would only jam the central area of the field and would leave the more deficient positions unimproved.
