Top of the Premier League table with only 1 loss this season, through to the UEFA Champions league knockout round without losing a game, Chelsea certainly have been the team to beat this season, be it in the league or European competition.
Jose Mourinho was ridiculed when last season he kept on downplaying Chelsea’s chances in winning the cups and the league, he always said that he should be judged based on the performance of the team this season with the players that he wants and boy was he right.
Out went big named players like Fernando Torres, David Luiz and Juan Mata, Mourinho brought in players that he likes and wants to build a team around them. Cesc Fabregas, Luis Felipe and Diego Costa were just some of this signings this season and each player has done their part for the Blues this season.
The transfer window is coming up and this is the time when managers decide if there are some important players to buy to fix out any chinks in the armour, although Chelsea have been exceptional this season there are a couple of places they can still do with some cover.
Midfield tanks
The smartest piece of business that Chelsea pulled off was bringing Nemanja Matic back into the team after his initial spell did not work out so well for the Serbian. Matic is now the midfield destroyer for Chelsea and has been one of the best players from the 2nd era of Jose Mourinho’s reign.
Not only is he strong but he can tackle and break up play very well plus he does have a bazooka for a foot and can lash out to shoot from distance, he could be the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League at the moment.
This is the only position that Chelsea need to bring someone in, John Obi Mikel and Ramires are the two players who can cover for Matic but when the Serb doesn’t play in the team due to injury or suspension, Chelsea seem to be lacking certain steel in midfield.
It won’t be easy to get someone who can do the same job as Matic and do it so well but Jose Mourinho does have a great eye for talent and he will be willing to get someone in just to ensure that the team does not lack the stability they have found in their midfield.
Almost every other position at Chelsea has 2 world class players to fight for the position, it is only the defensive midfielder’s role which has been claimed by one player and getting some good cover for Matic would be the best thing that Jose could do to ensure they not only win the league but win a cup competition or two.
