What Does The Signing Of This Talented Left Back By Spurs Mean To Liverpool?

Swansea left back Ben Davies was closing down on a move to Liverpool, who are in need of a left back to rotate with Jose Enrique. Meanwhile Tottenham Hotspur were also chasing him for quite a while and have now poached Ben Davies’ transfer away from Liverpool as Latest reports from BBC suggest that the Swans defender is set to have a medical at White Hart Lane.

Davies seemed to have been lured into choosing Liverpool for Champions League football, but White Hart Lane seems to be more promising for game time. Spurs are ready to outbid Liverpool for his signature and rumours are also going about that Liverpool’s long known interest in Alberto Moreno is one of the factors why Ben Davies could finally choose Spurs over the Reds, as he won’t want to be reduced to a second choice, despite being in a UCL playing team.

Ben Davies: Decent, but not Champions League quality.

Davies is a talented full back and has been really impressive with his show in Swansea City. A left back good in both attack as well as defence, Davies at age 21, has a bright future and untapped potential that Liverpool and Spurs obviously need. Liverpool, who have finally qualified for the Champions League after a long time out of it, need players to fill their squad and improve the depth. Davies would have been exactly that sort of player who would be a substitute for the more extravagant Moreno or injury prone and attack minded Jose Enrique.

In the Premier League with Swansea, he averaged about 1 key pass and 1 chance created per 90 metrics, while his tackles won/lost ratio is roughly 2:3. He has the traits of a good consistent left back when he enters his mid-twenties, but currently, he lacks experience and some untapped areas in technique to actually be of substantial help for the Champions League.

More Game Time seems to be the motivation.

Davies definitely wants to play each and every game possible. In Spurs, there is practically no left back in the team other than a highly inconsistent and attack minded Danny Rose. Also with Jan Vertonghen’s future hanging in balance, there is a desperate need for a left back who has good Premier League experience. Davies has an opportunity to make that space his own, which is very likely to happen because of the non-existent competition.

Davies would like to play as much as possible especially because of his need to develop and realise his potential. A switch to Liverpool or Spurs doesn’t really make much of a difference to him because both are sure upgrades on Swansea.

Liverpool should snatch Moreno as soon as possible.

Alberto Moreno has more European Experience and has also had a great season last time out with Sevilla. Moreno has been in the Reds’ radar for a long while and it would be no surprise that there is going to be a heated transfer battle for him. Moreno is a player they need desperately to rotate with Enrique so that the impressive Flanagan gets to play in his favoured Right Back spot.

Moreno’s transfer makes much more difference to the squad quality as he has a touch more flair and finesse than other left backs and definitely costlier and more technical in comparison to Davies. With good money to spend, Liverpool must not compromise on their squad as they need top talents and proven individuals to play for them in the League and the UCL.
