West Ham’s midfield would become a force to reckon with if they sign this £35m Chelsea flop and Pellegrini must do it

West Ham opinion: Should the Hammers make a move for Danny Drinkwater?

The Telegraph has reported that Maurizio Sarri has already told Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater that he has no future at the club. Drinkwater has struggled ever since his £35m move to Chelsea, with a handful of appearances under Antonio Conte last season.

Times are clearly changing and while Sarri does respect Drinkwater, the 29 year old really needs to move on in the next transfer window.

The central midfielder has played just one game this season, and that was 30 minutes in the Community Shield. West Ham should be looking to swoop in and make the move.

The Daily Mail did report earlier in January that the Hammers were very keen on a move for the Premier League winner, but nothing materialised.

A classy midfielder on his day, the 29-year-old would be a great partner for Declan Rice, thanks to a combination of selfless running and creativity. It’s why he paired up with N’Golo Kante so well in that Leicester City side, doing both the defensive and the offensive side of the game effectively.

Drinkwater finished that season with 8 assists in 35 appearances. He missed just two games that season and showcased the best of his abilities, alongside the brilliant Kante.

West Ham need a player like him at the moment. Drinkwater has shown an ability to play the Mark Noble role. A key part of Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham side, the 31-year-old dictates games from the centre of the park.

However, Noble does so much more, often joining the attack before sprinting as fast as his ageing knees will let him. That’s something that the West Ham captain cannot do for much longer, and Drinkwater should be the man to replace him.

He clearly has no future at Stamford Bridge, no matter how much he wants it and West Ham could change his future.

Conclusion

In Manuel Pellegrini, West Ham have a manager who can take them towards the top seven or higher in the Premier League. By spending smartly over the summer, they have a team at their disposal to do so.

But they are missing the final piece of the puzzle and that’s something that Danny Drinkwater can add. He needs something to re-ignite his career and the Olympic Stadium can help him do exactly that.
