West Ham opinion: Should the Hammers sign Danny Drinkwater?

According to a report from Calciomercato, West Ham have a strong interest in signing out of favour Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater in the summer.

The former Leicester man has failed to make a single appearance for the Blues since a 30-minute run in the Community Shield at the start of the season.

The Hammers could be without Declan Rice in the summer, who has been linked away with a move to Manchester United and Manchester City over the last few months. The 20-year-old has been one of the best players for the Hammers this season and losing him would be a massive blow.

However, Manuel Pellegrini will need to look for a replacement but someone of Rice’s quality and age will cost a fortune.

The Hammers can move in for a short-term replacement who can add value to their side and Danny Drinkwater is a perfect candidate.

The former Premier League winner’s services are clearly unwanted at Chelsea, having been left out all season and he would be an ideal midfielder for the Hammers next to someone like Mark Noble in the centre of the park.

Drinkwater’s range of passing is exceptional and he has the ability to pick out a pin-point pass from distance without any trouble. The 29-year-old has a brilliant right foot and is capable of scoring absolute stunners from a long way out.

Drinkwater would provide a brilliant balance between going forward and in defence for West Ham in midfield and he can constantly switch roles with Noble mid-game. The Englishman would bring in a ton of experience, having played over 300 senior games for club and country so far.

Drinkwater will also bring a ton of leadership and discipline to the Hammers’ squad and despite not having any game time over the course of the campaign, he would make a real difference for them next season.

The Englishman’s presence and experience in the centre of the park could be the push that West Ham need in their pursuit to make it into the Europa League spots next season.

Conclusion

Danny Drinkwater could well be the missing piece in the jigsaw for the Hammers to achieve a top-seven finish next season. The Englishman’s technical ability along with his experience and leadership will benefit West Ham massively next season.
