West Ham opinion: Should the Hammers make a move for Mitrovic?

According to reports from the Daily Star, West Ham are still very keen on a move for Fulham star Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Hammers are reportedly looking for a new front-man and while Maxi Gomez does remain their top target, the 24-year-old Mitrovic is a close second.

The former Newcastle United man has had a rather entertaining tie in the Premier League. He finished as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise terrible Cottagers’ team, with 11 Premier League goals to his name. Mitrovic scored more than Gonzalo Higuain, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Pedro, Anthony Martial and every West Ham player.

It’s a stunning return from a man who was playing for a side like Fulham. Fulham spent around £100million but still finished as the second team from the bottom and got sent back to the Championship almost immediately.

However, given that Mitrovic did finish as one of the lone stars in that side, it’s no surprise to see a few sides after the 24-year-old striker. Given West Ham’s issues up front, the Hammers need him more than any other Premier League side.

Their absurd dependence on Marko Arnautovic has really hurt the club, with the Serbian scoring just 10 goals, and even going on multiple drought spells. Not to mention, the midseason drama with China, further affected their position.

Barring the former Stoke City star, West Ham United have no bonafide front-man to lead the line and Andy Carroll’s departure once his contract officially expires would leave them with no direct replacements.

While the Hammers do have Javier Hernandez, the former Manchester United man hasn’t been his reliable Bayer Leverkusen self for quite some time.

But that’s exactly where someone like Aleksandar Mitrovic enters the fray for the club. For West Ham, few players would come as affordable, young and Premier League proven next summer, and the fact that Mitrovic suits their style of play will play a part.

Hammers’ boss Manuel Pellegrini likes his strikers to be big, tough and more importantly beasts in front of goal, which personifies Mitrovic. The Serbian is an absolute bully. Furthermore, he is a proven Premier League goalscorer with 23 goals in his last three top-flight seasons.

Conclusion

Aleksandar Mitrovic is the man that West Ham need leading the line and no matter what price Fulham quote, the Serbian is worth the money. His age combined with his experience and proven goalscoring record does mean that the Hammers should earn a large chunk of their money back with time.
