West Ham signing this experienced English veteran would make them a solid defensive unit next season – opinion

West Ham opinion: The Hammers should snap up Gary Cahill

According to a report from Football.London, West Ham are looking to snap up Gary Cahill, who has left Chelsea after serving his contract. The England international had an emotional farewell at Stamford Bridge after wearing the blue shirt for 8 years and winning pretty much everything there is to win in club football.

Leaving the club as the captain, the experienced centre-back can be a valuable asset to any club that he wishes to join due to his experience of playing at the highest level. West Ham have sensed this opportunity and are looking forward to welcoming him to another side of London.

The Hammers have a few exciting defenders in the likes of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena. Declan Rice too has always developed himself to become a centre-back, so having someone of Cahill’s experience will complement his younger counterparts.

Cahill also has a few years ahead of him. It was unfortunate that Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri did not use his experience to help the dressing room during difficult periods in the season.

In terms of his strengths, Cahill has always been an excellent header of the ball. Even though he may now be 33 years old, that’s an ability which he shouldn’t lose any time soon.

He’s not the best on the ball but in Antonio Conte’s first season, he improved his ball playing abilities due to the protection offered in a back-three system. Manuel Pellegrini could use him to neutralise the threats from long balls.
