West Brom opinion: Romaine Sawyers would be a top fit for the Baggies

According to Sky Sports, West Brom have agreed on a fee with their Championship rivals Brentford to sign midfielder Romaine Sawyers.

Sawyers, 27, joined Brentford from Walsall in 2016. Last season, he made 41 starts and one substitute appearance in the Championship for Brentford last season, providing six assists in the process.

His impressive performances had also caught the attention of Celtic, but West Brom appear to have won the race for the midfielder’s signature.

West Brom manager Slaven Bilic has been busy in the summer transfer window, adding the likes of Filip Krovinovic, Kenneth Zohore, Semi Ajayi and Darnell Furlong to the squad.

The Baggies narrowly missed out on promotion last term but the club have appointed Bilic to help them get over the line next term. The 50-year-old Croat is an experienced manager and he’ll need to ensure his squad is well-equipped to achieve promotion.

With Albion having lost three of their key attacking players in Dwight Gayle, Jay Rodriguez and Harvey Barnes in the last six-or-so months, a couple of versatile attackers could still be of use to Bilic’s side.

Romaine Sawyers would be a good fit at the Hawthorns and he showed at Brentford that there’s a really talented player in there and no doubt West Brom would be the ideal club to bring that quality out of him.

Sawyers is a versatile midfielder who will give Bilic the tactical flexibility he requires.

Technically good on the ball, the 27-year-old likes to dictate the tempo of the game from central midfield with his tough tackling and distribution skills. He would add a lot of energy, tenacity and robustness to the West Brom midfield, whilst potentially linking up well with Krovinovic.

Considering the amount of money West Brom have recouped from recent player sales, and the player Sawyers is could see him make an instant impact on Bilic’s squad. All in all, the midfielder would be a brilliant bit of business for the Albion.

Verdict

West Brom are on the verge of bagging a coup, as Sawyers’ versatility would be welcome at the Hawthorns.
