West Brom Opinion: Why the Baggies should go for Matheus Pereira?

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, West Brom are plotting a move for Sporting Lisbon winger Matheus Pereira.

Pereira, 23, spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side FC Nurnberg. While Nurnberg were relegated, the winger was one of the rare bright sparks in the side as he was nominated for the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Season award.

He made 19 appearances for the German club last season, scoring three goals and assisting two.

After selling Jay Rodriguez, Salomon Rondon and Craig Dawson, the Baggies are now starting to bring in players.

West Brom head coach Slaven Bilic has already recruited Filip Krovinovic on a season-long loan from Benfica and is keen bring in more players to boost his attacking options after losing several key players this summer as his side look to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

The Midlands outfit are short on the wing department after Jacob Murphy and Jefferson Montero returned to their parent clubs at the end of last season, although Oliver Burke has returned to the Hawthorns following a loan spell with Celtic.

And signing Matheus Pereira, who can play on either flank as well as in the no.10 position, could help to fill the void left by the pair.

Standing at 5ft 9in tall, Pereira is a technically gifted and tactically versatile attacker who has the tendency to cut inside onto his left and have a crack on goal or release an incisive through ball in the final third of the pitch.

In terms of his attributes, the Brazilian possesses a good turn of pace on the ball, can dribble past defenders in tight areas to open up space in between the lines and is good at closing people down without the ball.

The 23-year-old’s work ethic has been excellent, often running himself to the ground for Nurnberg over the course of the season. That’s what West Brom need, someone who is willing to give everything for their cause and it’s what will help them get promoted to the Premier League.

Verdict

Things at West Brom have slowly started changing and with the addition of Slaven Bilic, the Croatian tactician will be able to help them move forward. But to do that, they need to acquire the services of skilful and creative Pereira.
