Well done Gerrard – Rangers’ long-term future looks sorted with the addition of this 25-year-old prospect

Why Matt Polster is a solid long-term investment for Rangers

According to a report from ESPN, Rangers completed the signing of defender Matt Polster from Chicago Fire on transfer deadline day. The one-cap United States International has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Glasgow club after impressing on trial earlier last month.

Matt Polster, 25, appeared in 82 matches in four seasons with the Chicago Fire but missed a lot of action in 2018 due to an injury. But he managed to impress Steven Gerrard during the trial period before going on to join the Rangers squad for a mini training camp to Tenerife.

The free transfer of the USA defender happened to be Rangers’ final deal of the winter transfer window, with Gerrard already bringing in the likes of Steven Davis, Jermain Defoe and Andy Firth, as well as bagging pre-contract agreements for Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones.

Steven Gerrard

Gerrard’s Rangers sit second in the table but have fallen six points behind league leaders Celtic. The Gers have performed extremely well under Gerrard’s guidance and are doing everything possible to beat Celtic to the Premiership title.

Even though Rangers signed more than 12 players in the summer, Gerrard didn’t hesitate to spend in January to strengthen his squad further. He appears to be a man on a mission to break Celtic’s dominance in Scotland, and has been backed by his club.

As far as the acquisition of Matt Polster is concerned, he is likely to challenge the likes of James Tavernier and Jon Flanagan for the right-back spot. His versatility means the 25-year-old can also fill in as a midfielder when required but Rangers are well covered in that area. So we are likely to see Polster more in the defence than in the midfield.

Whatever may be the position, the Milwaukee-born star will look to nail down a regular place in the starting XI. Polster could find it difficult to adjust to a new league, so Gerrard should look to ease him into his team.

A signing like this might not make an immediate impact on the first-team but it is always good to have a young pool of players coming in, and Polster could be a top long-term investment for the Gers.
