“Well done Gerrard”, “Experience from Defoe”: Some Rangers fans on cloud nine after impressive 4-2 win vs Aberdeen + Match report

Aberdeen 2-4 Rangers: Gers get an important win to stay in the title hunt

Rangers managed to get over the line against Aberdeen 4-2 in a high-octane game at Pittodrie Stadium to stay at second position in the Scottish league. Alfredo Morelos scored twice for the Gers before getting sent off. James Tavernier and Jermaine Defoe were the other scorers for Steven Gerrard’s men.

Sam Cosgrove scored twice to give hope to Aberdeen, but it wasn’t enough for them as they went down to 10 men after Scott McKenna was sent off.

Morelos opened the scoring on the night in the 20th minute with a good finish but Cosgrove equalised for the hosts 11 minutes later to put an interesting perspective into this game. The former scored again for the Gers though, in the 38th minute to restore the lead.

Gerrard’s men were given a penalty three minutes before half-time when McKenna handled the ball inside the box. Tavernier stepped up and slotted the penalty coolly to give a commanding 3-1 lead to the Ibrox outfit.

Two minutes after the break, Tavernier gave away a cheap penalty. Cosgrove stepped up to pull one back for Aberdeen.

Six minutes later, McKenna and Morelos were at it against each other and eventually wanted to have a swipe. Hence, the referee had no choice but to send both the players off, making it a much more spicy encounter.

Rangers sealed the deal in stoppage time when they timed their counter-attack to perfection, with Tavernier feeding Defoe to score from virtually the last meaningful kick of the game.

The win keeps them within six points of leaders Celtic, with a glimmer of hope to catch them.
