“We deserved to lose”, “Pochettino will never win anything”: Some Tottenham fans furious after lacklustre 2-1 defeat to Burnley + Match Report

Tottenham vs Burnley report: Tottenham match report

Tottenham Hotspur’s title hopes were dealt a blow as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Ashley Barnes tapped in from close-range from a mishit Johann Berg Gudmundsson cross in the closing stages to claim a well-earned three points for Burnley. Chris Wood gave the Clarets the lead from a corner – but the set-piece was given in controversial circumstances with the ball seemingly going out of play off Jeff Hendrick.

Harry Kane returned from injury and scored, but with limited chances the home side finished better and deservedly took the three points.

Tottenham started the game well, dominating the possession with Burnley content to let them. But Mauricio Pochettino’s side were struggling to ask goalkeeper Tom Heaton too many questions, with headers from Kane and Serge Aurier posing no real problems.

Kane came close to opening the scoring for Tottenham as he turned and ran into the area but fired a low shot from his weaker left foot just wide. Though by half-time, Spurs had stepped up their efforts and produced a few half chances.

Only an outstanding save by Heaton prevented Kane from marking his return in spectacular style early in the second half, the Burnley shot-stopper to keep out the long-range effort. But just before the hour and totally against the run of play, Burnley took the lead with a set piece.

Dwight McNeil sent in the corner-kick which was met by Wood, who powered his header in off the bar from six yards. Pochettino reacted by throwing in Fernando Llorente and within few minutes the big Spaniard saw his side get back on level terms.

Danny Rose’s long throw found Kane in behind on the left side, and he cut inside before keeping his balance against a defender and shooting low past Heaton from close range.

But with seven minutes to go, Gudmondsson’s run and low cross brought the winner, with Barnes tapping in at the far post to send the home supporters in absolute jubilation.
