“We are the real deal” – Twitter Reacts To Burnley’s 1-0 Win vs Southampton + Player Ratings

Full Time: Southampton 0-1 Burnley

Sam Vokes scored a heroic late header for Burnley as the Clarets beat Southampton at the St. Mary’s stadium to continue their exemplary start to the Premier League. Vokes rose from the bench to find the bottom corner of Southampton’s net with just about 10 minutes remaining, to secure back-to-back victories for Burnley.

Sean Dyche’s men have now taken a massive 19 points from 11 games this term, and it looks like they will not slow down anytime soon. They are now 6th in the league table, after having suffered just 2 defeats in their opening 11 fixtures.

Let’s take a look at how the Burnley players fared against Southampton.

Burnley Player Ratings

Nick Pope – 9/10

The 25-year-old goalkeeper made several excellent saves that proved vital for majority of the game, and is proving to be a good replacement for Tom Heaton while he recovers from his injury.

Matthew Lowton – 7.5/10

The player put in a solid performance for the Clarets and did well in restricting the attacks from the Saints but he did give away the ball a few times.

James Tarkowski – 8/10

Tarkowski was a rock at the heart of Burnley’s defence. His presence was extremely crucial in helping the visitors maintain a strong dominion at the back.

Ben Mee – 8.5/10

Along with Tarkowski, Mee established a solid, impenetrable zone at the back. Although the Saints did build up pressure, the combined efforts of both players kept them from converting that into chances.

Stephen Ward – 7/10

Compared to the other defenders, Ward did fall short to an extent. But he still contributed with some important tackles and interceptions.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson – 8.5/10

The player created the chance for Vokes to score the goal in the dying minutes of the match, and was impressive throughout the game.

Steven Defour – 8/10

Defour has been influential for Burnley in the midfield in previous games and tonight was no different. He was swift, creative and kept things going.

Jack Cork – 8.5/10

Cork continues to be a formidable presence for Burnley as he battled hard with Southampton’s midfielders to maintain control, while also making incisive and attacking runs up front to create chances.

Robbie Brady – 7/10

Brady tried to make things happen for Burnley but he was just unlucky on that front. However, he did contribute to the attacks quite well even though they did not yield results.

Jeff Hendrick – 6/10

Hendrick failed to do anything with the efforts of the midfielders. Players like Cork and Defour sent a lot of chances his way but the player just seemed like he lacked energy.

Chris Wood – 6.5/10

Much like Hendrick, even Wood looked blunt and lacked the drive to score even though Southampton looked vulnerable at times.

Subs

Ashley Barnes – 7.5/10

Barnes made an instant impact after he came on and it was truly refreshing to see him inject a fresh sense of sharpness in an otherwise lacklustre Burnley attack.

Sam Vokes – 8.5/10

Vokes did a superb job of not only beating Yoshida to the ball but executing a brilliant header to guide it into the bottom corner from 12 yards out to give his side the lead.

Fans on Twitter were quick to share how happy they were about the win but then they also heaped praise on Nick Pope and Sam Vokes, who were easily the standout performers of the night.
