“We are the most successful club in England”: Some Liverpool fans on cloud nine after Super Cup win vs Chelsea + Match report

Liverpool vs Chelsea Report: Liverpool Match Report

Liverpool won their first trophy of the season by beating Chelsea on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup as the game ended 2-2 after 120 minutes. Tammy Abraham was the only one to miss his spot-kick to hand the Reds a 5-4 win in shoot-outs.

Olivier Giroud gave Chelsea the lead in the 36th minute when he was well-found by Christian Pulisic at the edge of the box. N’Golo Kante did some good work in the build-up of that move.

Liverpool equalised two minutes into the second half when Fabinho found Roberto Firmino with a clever chipped ball. The latter then had the presence of mind to find Sadio Mane, who took two attempts to score into an empty net.

Jurgen Klopp’s men roared back into the game in terms of creating more chances and looking more dangerous. Fabinho had an attempt which missed the target by an inch, while Jordan Henderson’s deflected shot almost caught Kepa Arrizabalaga wrong-footed.

The Chelsea stopper then made a double stop to thwart goal-bound attempts from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Moving into extra-time, Mane and Firmino combined again and the former was on hand to score a fantastic goal to give his side the lead in the 95th minute.

Five minutes later, Liverpool keeper Adrian was adjudged to have fouled Abraham in the box and a penalty was given. Jorginho stepped up and coolly equalised for Chelsea.

The game eventually went to penalties, where everyone, apart from Abraham scored. Adrian was the hero as he made the decisive save.

All in all, it was a very tough game for Liverpool, but a trophy is a trophy as they look to add more to their cabinet in the next nine months.
