Watford reviving interest in this 27-year-old German midfielder would help Gracia replace Doucoure

Watford Opinion: Why the Hornets should go all out to sign Diego Demme?

Ahead of the 2018 January transfer window, the Watford Observer claimed that Watford were interested in signing RB Leipzig midfielder Diego Demme. However, a move didn’t happen and the midfielder stayed with Leipzig.

The one-cap Germany international, 27, has been a consistent performer for RB Leipzig ever since he joined from SC Paderborn in 2014. He enjoyed another strong campaign at the Red Bull Arena, managing 26 appearances in the Bundesliga and also made his debut in the national team last year.

Leipzig are under the new management of Julian Nagelsmann, who will be in no rush to sell Diego Demme as he is under contract until 2021. With that in mind, Watford must spend big to land the versatile midfielder this summer.

The Hornets have made just one signing so far ahead of the 2019/20 campaign — Craig Dawson from West Brom.

Manager Javi Gracia will know that he will need a few more additions if he is to build on last season’s 11th-place finish in the Premier League as teams around them have already invested big money to strengthen their squads.

Watford would need a bit of bite and energy if Abdoulaye Doucoure leaves the club this summer, as the Frenchman has already expressed his desire to play Champions League football.

With Gracia’s team missing out on a place in Europe following a humiliating defeat in the FA Cup final to Manchester City, Doucoure, who is 26 and entering the prime stages of his career, may leave for a club playing in the Champions League this summer.

Gracia needs to be prepared for that situation and bolster his midfield options with the signing of Diego Demme.

Demme largely operates as a defensive midfielder but can play in a number of positions across the midfield. Standing at just 5ft 7in tall, he isn’t the most imposing midfielder in Europe but he is technically very sound and has an excellent engine which helps him run tirelessly throughout a game.

The one-cap German international is a top tackler and expert at intercepting opposition’s advances.

The ex-Paderborn man has a good passing range as well and is always keen on playing on the front foot and making forward passes.

Demme is an intelligent player and someone who could be vital for Watford, who need a bit more depth to their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Verdict

Should Doucoure leave Watford, Demme could be his ideal replacement at the club.
