Watford going all out to sign this 27-year-old defender would go a long way in boosting their forces at the back

Why Watford should go all out to sign Lazio’s Bastos in January

According to reliable journalist Simon Collings of the London Evening Standard, Watford were interested in signing Lazio defender Bastos during the summer transfer window. However, a move didn’t materialise then.

Bastos, 27, joined Lazio from FC Rostov in 2016 and has played 76 games across all competitions so far. He managed only 18 appearances for Lazio in the Serie A last season as Simeone Inzaghi’s men finished 8th in the standings and missed out on European qualification.

The Angolan defender’s performances caught Watford’s attention and they should have signed him before the start of the 2019/20 campaign. The Hornets have endured a miserable start to the new Premier League campaign, managing only a point after four games.

Despite knowing his team’s defensive problems, Javi Gracia surpassingly chose only to sign one defender in Craig Dawson from West Brom. Dawson is an experienced defender but he has struggled to show any authority at the back for his new club.

The idea of the Rochdale-born defender coming in and solving Watford’s defensive problems haven’t gone according to the scripts.

The Hornets had a decent 2018/19 and Gracia will want to break into the top half of the table this time around.

In order to achieve that, Gracia should reignite his interest in Bastos and attempt to sign him when the January transfer window opens.

Bastos has never really been considered as a regular starter for Lazio ever since his arrival at the Stadio Olimpico, with the Angolan largely filling in as a useful squad player at the club.

Standing just below 6ft 2in, he certainly has the physical attributes to play in the Premier League. The Angolan has earned rave reviews for his physicality, aerial ability and good game reading skills.

The right-footed centre-back is composed with the ball at his feet and can initiate attacks from the back. He likes to be physically dominant against centre-forwards and read the game well from the defensive point of view.

Bastos is a good organiser, can make vital interceptions for his team and is a genuine threat from set-pieces in the opposition box.

The ex-Rostov man is generally a reliable presence and is currently operating at the prime of his career. Having never really nailed down a regular place at Lazio, Bastos might as well be tempted by the prospect of more regular minutes at Watford.

Verdict

Hence, Watford shouldn’t hesitate much and go all out for Bastos to solve their defensive conundrum.
