Championship opinion: Five contenders for the goal of the season

Goals are the bread and butter of the footballing world. They win games and lose games, they break hearts and mend hearts. But more importantly, when they are scored, the adrenaline for both the fans and the players themselves are down right incredible.

That being said, this season has seen more than a few belters scored in the Championship season, and there are more than a few contenders for the goal of the season. Shortlisting them has been terribly difficult but a job that needs to be done.

Harry Wilson: Derby County vs Swansea City

Arguably Derby County’s best player this season, the 22 year old has ten goals to his name and two of them came in this fixture. However, it was the first one that caught the eye, with the Liverpool loanee showing his class and clinical nature, with a sensational strike.

Handed the ball, with five Swansea players surrounding him, the youngster did have a few options to pass the ball but instead, his youthful exuberance and confidence stood out and Wilson decided to have a pop on goal from 30 yards out.

Brilliantly struck, Swansea city goalkeeper Erwin Mulder had no chance and just watched as the ball flew into the net.

John McGinn: Aston Villa vs Sheffield Wednesday

Villa were down 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday when McGinn scored this absolute belter from just outside the box. It started out as a wild cross into the box that was defended well by Wednesday but few people expected what would happen next.

With the ball falling in a perfect arch, John McGinn swung his foot with control and delicacy, with the ball connecting perfectly with his foot. It swerved and curved just past the goalkeeper, rattling the bar before falling into the net.

Alan Hutton: Aston Villa vs Birmingham City

Handed the ball inside his own half, Hutton proceeded to shimmy and shrug off three defenders on his way towards the goal. In fact the Birmingham City players were so shocked that nobody even tried to tackle or take the ball off the 34-year-old.

The fact that it came from a 34-year-old right-back makes it even more improbable and incredible.

Omar Bogle: Birmingham City vs Stoke City

The score was 1-0 and Birmingham City brought on Omar Bogle, who was on loan from Cardiff City. All the centre-forward had to do was threaten Stoke City. Instead, Bogle did what exactly the opposite of what he was supposed to do and scored an absolute banger.

After a fantastic first touch to take him away from his marker, Bogle slowly walked towards Butland’s goal, with a purpose.

Eventually, the England goalkeeper realised what was about to happen but it was a second too late. Bogle’s left-footed curler found the back of the net, moving just enough to avoid the 6’5” Stoke goalkeeper.

Semi Ajayi: Rotherham vs Leeds United

A brilliant goal if not one of the best goals this season and it stemmed from a brilliant team move between three Rotherham players. Mattock got the ball just before the half-way line, played a brilliant one-two with Will Vaulks and then Forde, who laid it off for Ajayi.

Mattock continued his run, expecting the defensive midfielder to set him free, but that never happened. Instead, Ajayi, with a mind of his, decided to have a pop on goal from just inside 30 yards.

As a defensive midfielder, no-one expected what would happen next but the ball, as if with a mind of its own, went right into the top corner, away from the flailing Kiko Casilla.

Tom Landry once said "Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable." Football is and always will be the beautiful game. What every child understands, yet every adult struggles to, is that it is a game that defines the nature of the universe. But that's just me.
