2 Young Full-Backs Tottenham Should Sign As Backup For Their Star English Defenders

Kyle Walker and Danny Rose

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Tottenham Hotspur have the two best full-backs in the league in Kyle Walker and Danny Rose. The English right-back and left-back duo have been one of the biggest strengths for Spurs this season, be it in the attacking sense or defensively.

The 26-year old Walker has been a force to be reckoned with on the right-side and has been one of the biggest creative influences for Spurs this season with his attacking forays. The England international has played all but one of 28 Premier League games for Tottenham and has set up 5 goals this term. He also has created 35 goal scoring opportunities – second-best in the entire Tottenham squad behind Christian Eriksen.

On the opposite flank, Danny Rose has had a similar impact too. The 26-year old has missed a good chunk of games for Tottenham due to injury, but in his 18 appearances till then, he had scored two goals and assisted two more. Rose had also created 26 clear-cut chances and this indicates his importance to the team.

In Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies, Tottenham have able back-ups to fall back upon if there are injuries or suspension concerns for their first-choice full-back pair. However, Davies hasn’t been able to convince many of his abilities during his recent performances in the absence of Rose. Trippier just doesn’t get enough game time at all, despite him showing what he capable of when called upon.

With the summer transfer window not so far away, we look at two young full-backs who could come in at Tottenham and challenge the likes of Rose and Walker in the coming years:

Ryan Sessegnon

The 16-year old is making all sorts of waves in the EFL Championship with Fulham and has attracted interest from all the big wigs in the Premier League including Tottenham.

Sessegnon has been excellent in recent weeks for the Cottagers and has scored 6 goals and set up three more in 25 appearances across all competitions. Excellent returns for a full-back and it makes for an even better reading when taking his age into account. Tipped as the next Gareth Bale by the media, the left-back is clearly a huge talent and can find himself challenging Ben Davies at Tottenham and may even force him out of the team.

Dominic Iorfa

Another defender who is making all the right noises in the Championship. The 21-year old Iorfa is enjoying a decent season with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The England youth international is primarily a right-back but can also operate as a centre-half if needed and has been earning rave reviews for his performances this term. A solid defender who is tall and physically strong, Iorfa also possesses a decent turn of pace and can romp up and down the flank. He has made 25 appearances this season for the Wolves and has one assist to his name. A fine young prospect, Iorfa will add depth to the squad and serves as an option at centre-half as well due to his versatility.
