Chelsea lack stability when it comes to their managers. Ever since Abrahamovic took ownership of the club back in 2004, they have not had a manager who has stayed for more than three years. Now, if reports are to be believed, current manager Antonio Conte could be shown the door after an average season with the Blues.
There has been a lot of speculation as to who could replace him and one name that’s been doing the rounds lately is Maurizio Sarri. Interestingly enough, it also reported that the former Napoli manager might bring in Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola as his assistant manager. Here are two reasons why Zola’s return could prove great for the club.
1. Footballing heritage
Zola is undoubtedly one of Chelsea’s best players ever and he has the ability to command respect in the club. When a club legend like him is actively involved in the progress of youth stars, the youngsters will begin to showcase results in order to impress him.
Most of the youth players would have come across his legacy at the club multiple times and having him manage them could boost their performances.
2. The fans love him!
Zinedine Zidane’s tenure at Real Madrid proved that having a united dressing room is all it takes to extract the best out of their players. Conte, meanwhile, has had one too many fallouts at the club which includes the infamous departure of Diego Costa at the end the 2016/17 season. Such quandaries can destabilize the dressing room and prove to be counter-productive.
Zola, however, is a fan-favourite who has a great temperament. His calming presence could help some of the players develop and make them feel comfortable. His reputation with the club would command the respect of the players, enabling him to start on the right note.
Thus, it goes without saying that Gianfranco Zola will be a great figure for the Blues in the dressing room. It will be a reassuring scenario, not just for the fans and but also the players. As an assistant manager, Zola can learn the ropes from Sarri and possibly do a Zidane and take over the club sometime in the future.
