West Ham United have been really poor of late in the Premier League and are winless in their last six games. In fact, the east Londoners’ last league victory came against Manchester United back in September.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side is already 16th in the table, looking over their shoulders rather than up. They endured a chastening 3-0 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor before the international break.
They have three London derbies in their next four matches, as well as a trip to Wolves during that time.
The Hammers’ dip in form worsened when Pellegrini fielded an under-strength team in the Carabao Cup third-round clash with Oxford United. The League One side duly mauled them 4-0 at the Kassam Stadium and things have gone from bad to worse ever since.
It’s crystal clear that West Ham need reinforcements to achieve a top-half finish this season. They looked like contenders to challenge for a European spot after the first six games but with injuries to key players, coupled with poor form and some individual errors, the Hammers find themselves near the relegation zone.
That being said, here are two players Pellegrini should sign in January to save the season.
Back in July, reports from the Netherlands (h/t the Daily Mail) suggested that West Ham were interested in signing Ajax defender Joel Veltman.
Veltman, 27, is exactly the type of player West Ham need after their poor defensive displays this season. The Dutchman is having a solid season at Ajax, as he continues to be one of the crucial members in Erik Ten Haag’s side.
The 27-year-old, who can play in both central defence and right-back, would be a smart addition to the Hammers’ backline. Veltman has tons of experience plus his leadership skills and winning mentality could make an instant impact at the London Stadium.
Back in June, A Bola (h/t The Sun) had claimed that West Ham were interested in signing FC Porto striker Moussa Marega.
West Ham need a new striker to cover and compete with Sebastien Haller, who has gone off the boil after a really good start to his debut season in England. Haller has shown flashes of his potential but he could blossom with a partner up top.
And Marega could be that player. The Mali international has been a prolific goalscorer for Porto over the last couple of seasons and would bring some much-needed freshness to the Hammers attack, whilst also adding depth to the squad.
Hence, Pellegrini should go all out to sign the Porto ace to solve West Ham’s goalscoring woes.
