Two Mikael Lustig replacements Celtic must consider signing

Scottish champions Celtic fell to a 3-1 defeat against Red Bull Salzburg in their latest Europa League group-stage clash. Once again, their defence flopped on the big night.

Salzburg enjoyed quite a bit down Celtic’s right flank as Mikael Lustig looked off the pace and devoid of energy in Austria. In fact, it wasn’t the first time that Lustig had a forgettable night this season. He has been poor so far this season, often lacking positional awareness and the basic understanding of the game.

Lustig, 31, has put in some great shifts for the Hoops over the years but he is not quite the same player he once was at Celtic Park. The Swede has been part of Celtic’s last seven Premiership titles but after nearing eight long years at Parkhead, it seems like time is ripe for Brendan Rodgers to move on and upgrade the right-back department.

Also with Lustig’s contract expiring at the end of the season, here are two replacements Rodgers must consider signing.

  1. Craig Dawson (West Brom)

Celtic could do a wonderful job by bringing in West Brom right-back Craig Dawson.

Dawson has been a great performer for West Brom over the years. He initially moved to the Hawthorns as a centre-back before establishing himself at right-back.

Dawson is a tall and robust defender, who has solid technique and composure on the ball. And considering his versatility, he could be a good addition for Celtic.

  1. Hiroki Sakai (Marseille)

Another exciting prospect could be Marseille right-back, Hiroki Sakai. Sakai has been a regular fixture for Marseille since joining from Hannover in 2016.

The Japanese is an attacking right-back whilst also strong defensively with top tackling traits. He can play at left-back and in central defence if required.

Sakai would offer vast experience to this Celtic side after serving stints in Japan, Germany and France. With that in mind, the powerful performer could be a straight upgrade on Lustig.
