2 Defenders who Rangers could sign to add some serious steel to their backline including this Stoke City star

Steven Gerrard has been appointed as the new Rangers manager and he has wasted no time in improving the squad ahead of next season.

The Scottish giants have already signed Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy to start off with what looks to be a busy summer for Gerrard and Rangers.

Gerrard, the former Liverpool U-18 coach, has a lot of work to do if he wants the Gers to challenge Celtic, who have won the Scottish Premiership title seven times on the trot. Gerrard needs quality signings to break the Hoops’ dominance, and he needs them quick.

While Rangers finished 3rd in the 2017/18 edition of the Scottish Premiership, they conceded a lot of goals. The entire defence flopped this past season which means defensive reinforcements are a must for the Light Blues if they are to improve as a unit next season.

Last summer’s signings Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso struggled to make an impact at Ibrox, and with David Bates also agreeing on a move to Hamburg, Rangers need to bolster their defence.

As defence remains an area of concern, here are two defenders Rangers should sign to improve their backline ahead of next campaign.

Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City)

It was a long, painful season for the Stoke supporters as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League, and it would be very tough for the Potters to keep hold of their star players.

One player who could be lured away from the Bet365 stadium in the summer is Ryan Shawcross, who has been ever-present in their team since joining way back in 2007.

Rangers should definitely try to bring the experienced central defender to Ibrox as he could make a massive impact in the Scottish Premier League. He may have blown hot and cold but Shawcross has proven over the years his level of consistency and could fancy a new challenge in Scotland.

The Stoke defender could be a major upgrade over the current defensive options at Rangers and Shawcross is just the kind of signing the Gers need in the summer.

Sebastian Prodl (Watford)

The Rangers defence has been average for quite some time now, and signing experienced head, who has played at the highest level, could be massive in turning around their fortunes.

Watford’s Sebastian Prodl could be ideal for Rangers. The Austrian is a strong central defender with bags of experience.

Landing a central defender is paramount, and Rangers should consider making a move for Prodl.
