Two Best Transfers Tottenham Have Completed In Recent Times

Tottenham Hotspur have been a club on the rise in recent years. Since Mauricio Pochettino took over the reins, the North Londoners have made huge strides in the right direction and have established themselves as one of the title contenders for the Premier League title over the past two years. They currently sit 2nd in the table and with still 4 games left to be played, they do stand an outside chance of beating Chelsea to the title triumph.

A transfer policy of recruiting young players with great potential and developing them at the club has been a hit and a miss for Tottenham in recent years. Not all the new recruits over the past few years have managed to excel. Case in point being Paulinho, Roberto Soldado etc. But there have been several huge hits – Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier to name a few.

Ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, here we take a look at two of the best signings that Tottenham have made in recent years:

Toby Alderweireld

The Belgian international arrived in the summer of 2015 from Atletico Madrid for a fee of £11.4 million, after a serious transfer tussle with Southampton and has become an integral part of the Tottenham squad since his arrival.

Alderweireld has been the cornerstone on which Tottenham’s title challenges over the past two years have been built upon. His presence in the backline led to Spurs conceding just 35 goals in the previous campaign, which was the best defensive record in the Premier League. This season as well, he has been equally dominant at the back, leading the side to another best defensive performance with just 22 goals conceded so far.

A leader on the pitch and a threat from set-pieces as well, there is a lot that Alderweireld brings to the table. While the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane hog all the limelight, the 28-year old has been equally important, if not more than the Englishmen. Considering that Tottenham got him for such a low price, it makes him one of their best transfers in the recent past.

Dele Alli

The 21-year old arrived as an unknown quantity to the fans who didn’t follow the lower leagues ardently. But he did not take long to become one of the most explosive midfielders in Europe.

Alli joined Tottenham from MK Dons for just £5million in January 2015 but spent the rest of the season on loan at his previous club. Having joined Spurs squad in the summer of 2015, the Englishman made an immediate impact and soon became a vital cog in the Tottenham midfield.

Having finished his debut season with 10 goals, that earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award, Alli has continued where he left off in the ongoing campaign. He has managed to double his goal tally this time around, having found the back of the net on 21 occasions already. He was the recipient of the PFA Young Player of the Year award once again this season. Surely one of the best buys for Tottenham, not just in recent past, but in the club’s history.
