Back in July, a report from The Sun had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing FC Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel. However, a deal didn’t materialise as Schalke were reluctant to lose their no.1 goalkeeper.
Alexander Nubel, 22, is one of the brightest talents in the Bundesliga. He was excellent in the Under-21 European Championships throughout the tournament. But he made a glaring error in the final against Spain that apparently cost Germany the title earlier this summer.
Nevertheless, the shot-stopper’s stock continues to rise and Tottenham must reignite their interest in Nubel and test Schalke’s resolve when the transfer window reopens in January.
Veteran goalkeeper Michel Vorm departed Tottenham in the summer, leaving Mauricio Pochettino with Hugo Lloris, Paulo Gazzaniga and young Alfie Whiteman.
Spurs’ undisputed no.1 and skipper, Hugo Lloris, had his share of highs and lows in the 2018/19 campaign. The French World Cup winner was guilty of making a number of high-profile mistakes, although he did guide Tottenham to the Champions League final.
Lloris may still have a good few years left in him but he isn’t reliable as he once was. Gazzaniga had a hot and cold pre-season tour, the prospect of him replacing Lloris as the club’s no.1 shouldn’t be a great idea.
Whiteman is very young and inexperienced and it’ll be best for him to go out on loan at a Championship club. Considered one of the better up and coming young goalkeepers, Nubel finished with 18 appearances in the Bundesliga with all of them coming after January, effectively replacing Ralph Farhmann.

Standing at an impressive 6ft 3in tall, Nubel is certainly an imperious figure but agile enough to make low saves.
Not just that, his reflexes are pretty impressive for a 22-year-old, but it’s his ability with his feet that makes him perfect for Tottenham, who like to build from the back. In fact, Nubel has the ability and potential to easily surpass Lloris.
Lloris will turn 33 in December and probably it’ll be the right time for Spurs to move on from the French stopper. Nubel being young and highly rated in his home country could just be that man to replace Lloris.
