Tottenham signing this West Ham speed demon would get them a perfect backup for a key position next season

Tottenham opinion: Should Spurs sign Arthur Masuaku?

According to a report from the Sun, Tottenham are set to battle it out with Borussia Dortmund and Fiorentina for the signing of West Ham’s Arthur Masuaku in the summer.

The Hammers full-back will enter the final year of his contract at the start of next season, which could prove to be helpful in bagging him in the summer.

The Congolese international has had an extended run of games due to Aaron Cresswell’s absence and he has had a fairly impressive season. However, does it make sense for Spurs to target him in the summer?

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have had a brilliant campaign in the Champions League, where they’ve made it to the final at the start of next month in Madrid. However, injuries have cost them in their title bid which led them to finish in 4th place, just one point ahead of rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham will have a lot to consider in the upcoming transfer window, especially with Danny Rose expected to leave the North Londoners at the end of the season. This would leave Tottenham with just Ben Davies as their senior left-back.

Spurs will need to bring in another left-back and Masuaku would be a smart choice. The 25-year-old knows the English game well, having played 75 times for the Hammers since his move from Olympiakos in 2016.

Masuaku has played 23 times in the Premier League this season and he has shown what he is capable of. The full-back possesses the brilliant combination of pace and strength, which he uses to good effect on his charging runs down the left flank.

However, Masuaku has been caught out at times in defence which he will have to improve in the coming years. His crosses can be better, while his positioning with or without possession also needs work to help him develop into a top player in the coming years.

Fortunately for Spurs, Masuaku is still only 25 and he has some time to get himself adjusted to what Pochettino would expect off of him next season. He would certainly improve under the Spurs boss and he would be an ideal backup to Davies next season.
