Tottenham signing this promising young Bundesliga wall would surely be a step in the right direction

Why Tottenham Hotspur should target Timo Baumgartl in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur have one of the best defenders in the Premier League in Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian joined Tottenham from Southampton back in 2015 and has established himself as a vital part of the team’s defence.

Such has been Alderweireld’s meteoric rise in the last few years that he would walk into pretty much any starting XI in world football. The 30-year-old will be available in the summer for just £25million after Tottenham triggered a clause in his contract.

This leaves Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs at the risk of losing Alderweireld to any club in the summer for a relatively cheaper price. Hence, it’s important for Pochettino to plan life after Alderweireld.

Keeping that in mind, Spurs should target Stuttgart defender Timo Baumgartl in the summer transfer window. A former German U21 international, Timo Baumgartl has been an ever-present figure in Stuttgart’s backline this season.

Although Stuttgart continue tottering in the relegation zone, the 22-year-old has dished out impressive displays in the Bundesliga.

At 22, Timo Baumgartl has a whole career ahead of him and if Stuttgart get relegated from the Bundesliga, which looks likely this season, SpursTottenham must pounce on the player. A move to Tottenham would be ideal for the German defender as it will give him a chance to develop at a rapid rate under Pochettino.

Pochettino has been a promoter of youth ever since he came to England. The Argentine has built his Spurs team around youth and adding a player of Baumgartl’s quality would be another step in the right direction.

Timo Baumgartl is a strong, powerful and aerially dominant central defender who is comfortable with the ball at his feet as well. He is incredibly strong in the air, tenacious in the tackle, and is also very quick on the ground. The German doesn’t fluster in pressure situations and has the confidence to play out from the back – the traits needed in a modern-day defender.

After firing blank in the last two transfer windows, Pochettino faces an extremely busy summer transfer window ahead of him and he must bring in some fresh faces to make Spurs genuine title challengers next season.

Signing Baumgartl should be prioritised by Spurs as the German could turn out to be a signing of real significance for them.
