According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Tottenham are interested in bringing back AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko to the Premier League.
Edin Dzeko, 33, went out on loan from Manchester City to AS Roma in 2015 before making the move permanent and has played nearly 200 times for the Serie A outfit. He has established himself as an important player at the Italian club.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international scored 9 goals and provided 6 assists in the Serie A last season and the striker has scored 6 goals and provided one assist in the league this season so far. With Dzeko impressing in Roma colours, Tottenham should go for him in January.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho wants to ease the burden off Harry Kane’s shoulders, as per the report. Although Son Heung-min can play up front, Kane is pretty much the only out-and-out senior striker at Tottenham.
Any injury to the England international will leave Mourinho light in that position. Kane has struggled with ankle problems over the last few seasons and it’s vital that Tottenham bring in a reliable cover.
Fernando Llorente did a very good job as a back-up for Kane but he was released by the club at the end of the 2018/19 campaign. Thus, it makes complete sense for Spurs to bring in someone who can cover and compete with Kane, and Dzeko would simply be ideal.
Dzeko has been Roma’s top-scorer this season so far, netting 8 in 19 appearances across all competitions. He has done extremely well in the Serie A since leaving England a few years ago.
The Bosnian has solid Premier League experience and won the Premier League title twice with Manchester City. Thus, he knows the Premier League inside out and won’t take much time to adapt to English football.
The former Wolfsburg man may have turned 33 but he is still going strong and can offer Spurs with two quality years at the highest level, at least. Truly, Dzeko can be a very good back-up to Kane, who is the undisputed first-choice striker at Tottenham.
The Bosnian’s rich European experience and winning mentality could be immense for a Spurs side aiming to win trophies under Mourinho.
When playing for City, Dzeko scored 50 goals in 130 Premier League appearances. There’s absolutely no doubt that the 33-year-old would be the perfect foil for Kane as he would allow the Spurs talisman to get some rest when required and stay fit throughout the season.
