Tottenham signing this 27-year-old star from PL rivals would be a cost-effective move to replace Alderweireld

Tottenham Opinion: Why Fabian Schar would be a smart fit for Tottenham?

According to a report from the Sun, Newcastle United are facing a summer exodus, with Fabian Schar one of the stars considering exit after Rafael Benitez’s shock departure.

Schar, 27, was one of Newcastle’s top performers last season, and he has quickly become a fans’ favourite at St. James’ Park.

The Switzerland international has to be regarded as one of Rafael Benitez’s best value for money signings during his time at Newcastle. He scored four goals in 24 league appearances for the Magpies this past season as the Toon Army ended the campaign in 13th position.

With Newcastle having already cashed in on Ayoze Perez, there are now concerns about many of their key players’ futures.

Back in March, a report from the Metro claimed that Tottenham were lining up a summer swoop for Schar. With Newcastle in a complete mess at the moment following Benitez’s departure, the time could be ripe for Mauricio Pochettino’s side to reignite their interest in the Swiss defender and sign him.

Pochettino must prioritise signing a new central defender this summer, with Toby Alderweireld entering the final 12-months of his contract at Spurs after the club triggered an optional one-year extension in his existing deal back in January. But he can leave for a bargain £25m due to a release clause in his contract.

Alderweireld’s Belgian compatriot, Jan Vertonghen, who has established himself as one of the best central defenders in the Premier League is 32 and has started showing signs of slowing down. Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth are future for the club and they need an experienced head other than Vertonghen to mentor them if Alderweireld leaves this summer.

Pochettino has very little depth in defence available to him and he must take advantage of Newcastle’s turbulence to sign Fabian Schar.

Schar was arguably Newcastle’s best defender last season, helping the club maintain a solid defensive record in the Premier League throughout 2018/19. The Swiss is excellent in the tackle, reads the game superbly and good with the ball at his feet. Those are all attributes that would make him an ideal replacement for Alderweireld.

A player with as much experience as Schar is the perfect type of player for Pochettino to manage. He is 27 and playing in his prime, meaning the Switzerland international may be more inclined to join the north Londoners, who will be plying their trade in the Champions League.

Verdict

Schar would not command a big fee, which would suit Spurs, and could be the kind of low-cost option that suits them to the ground.
