English news outlet Metro reported earlier that Tottenham are keen on a move for Manchester United star Eric Bailly. The North London side are looking for defensive reinforcements and have been previously linked with a move for the Ivorian.
Currently, at Manchester United, Bailly has struggled to make an impact this season. The 25-year-old was a big part of the club last season and the season before last, playing a total of 47 games over the last two seasons.
Only a major injury to his ankle last season saw Bailly’s playing time drop down, with him missing 21 games and 100 days of action. Things got even worse this season, with nothing going to plan.
He’s found himself benched under both Jose Mourinho and now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, struggling to get game-time ahead of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. So far, Eric Bailly has managed just 17 appearances to his name, with 11 in the Premier League.
This includes just four since Solskjaer took over, unable to even show how solid he can be. A solid defender on his day, the Ivory Coast international epitomizes the modern defender, which is why former manager Jose Mourinho actually brought him in.
That is why Tottenham have been linked (Daily Mail) with a move for him in the past. It’s also why they should consider making one in the future. Toby Alderweireld may have signed a contract extension with the club but it includes a £25million release clause (Telegraph).
This could cause a lot of issues for Tottenham, especially with the likes of Manchester United in the race. They need defensive stability and at the age of 25, Eric Bailly can provide them with that.
He’s revealed that he would be open to a move away in the future, as he is looking for proper game-time to help further his career (Mirror). For Tottenham, this is an opening they need to consider, especially if they ever want to catch up to Manchester City and Liverpool.
If nothing else, Eric Bailly is a Premier League experienced center-back, who has showcased what he can do when given time.
