Why Steven Sessegnon could be a smart signing for Tottenham

According to a report from the Sun, Tottenham are trying to pluck away Fulham starlet Steven Sessegnon – less than a month after signing his twin brother.

Tottenham signed Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham on deadline day last month. Ryan Sessegnon finally completed his move to north London after more than two years of speculation, though he’s yet to make his debut through injury.

However, Spurs may not be done raiding Fulham as they are already eyeing a move for Steven Sessegnon following his fantastic start to the Championship season.

Steven Sessegnon, 19, is slowing establishing himself as a key player for Fulham following his brother’s departure, starting four of their six Championship games and looking to help them to instant promotion back to the Premier League.

That has seen him being called up to the England Under-21 squad who play Turkey and Kosovo.

Tottenham have had a shaky start to the season, winning just five points from their first four games. Mauricio Pochettino was backed heavily in the transfer window this time around and he managed to address some of the key areas of his squad.

One area which needs reinforcing is the right-back department, with Pochettino left with Kyle Walker-Peters and Serge Aurier following Kieran Trippier’s departure to Atletico Madrid.

Walker-Peters has started the new season as Tottenham’s first-choice right-back but his injury forced Pochettino to deploy Davinson Sanchez in that position against Arsenal as Aurier isn’t that reliable defensively.

Steven Sessegnon, who can play at the heart of the back four or in central midfield, has shown great promise playing at right-back for Scott Parker’s men this season. He has shown in a handful of appearances for the Cottagers that he has the potential to play at the very highest level.

Sessegnon’s versatility to play all across the defence should be a factor that’ll definitely come in handy for Pochettino’s side in the future.

The Spurs manager has worked wonders with younger players in the past and Sessegnon could be the latest youngster to richly profit from his guidance. All in all, the teenage prodigy’s acquisition would be a smart move for Tottenham.

Verdict

Sessegnon currently has three years left on his current contract, and Fulham have the option to extend it by a further 12 months. Thus, Tottenham will have to fork out a good amount of money to sign him in January.
