Tottenham reviving their interest in 61-goal speed demon would make them a fearsome force next season

Tottenham opinion: Timo Werner would be a great signing for Spurs

RB Leipzig star Timo Werner is not planning on extending his contract, according to manager Ralf Rangnick (h/t The Express). Werner, 23, who has scored 61 goals in 114 games for RB Leipzig since joining from Stuttgart back in 2016, has one year left on his current deal.

The 23-year-old striker, regarded as one of Europe’s deadliest poachers, has attracted a lot of interest from some of Europe’s top clubs and it’ll certainly be a challenge for RB Leipzig to keep hold of their star striker.

Tottenham were interested in signing the German international during the January transfer window, as per the Express.

However, a move didn’t materialise then but keeping the centre-forward’s situation at Leipzig in mind, the summer transfer window is absolutely the right time for North London club to reignite their interest in Werner.

After another top-four finish and thrilling run to the Champions League final, Mauricio Pochettino must now work out what’s next. The Spurs manager must show ambition in the summer transfer market after failing to land a player in the past two transfer windows.

With an exciting project in place and a manager like Pochettino at the helm, Tottenham can tempt players to choose the famous white shirt over other money-spinning offers. The Argentinean tactician must bring in a striker to compete and cover for Harry Kane from next season.

Kane has suffered ankle injuries for the past couple of campaigns now and Pochettino just cannot let that happen season after season. And with Fernando Llorente set to leave the club on a free transfer next month, Spurs need more depth as far as the forward department is concerned.

Timo Werner would be a good fit at Tottenham. The German is world-class and his pace, composure, skill and vision would add more potency to Pochettino’s attack next season.

A very nippy player, the 23-year-old uses his agility and confidence to beat opposition defenders time after time. But more so, it’s his finishing ability and link-up play that should appeal to Spurs.

The ex-Stuttgart man will also bring more goals to this Spurs side, who came ever so close to breaking their trophy drought last season. Tottenham need that kind of player at the club and Werner’s versatility to lead the line as well as operate as a supportive striker makes him absolutely perfect for the club.

Moreover, Werner would not only bolster Spurs’ attacking ranks, but also add much-needed depth to the squad.

Verdict

Werner is a fantastic player with so much potential to develop. If Spurs realistically want to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title next season, the signing of the German sharpshooter is a move they have to make this summer.
