Tottenham should not hesitate to sign Abdoulaye Doucoure from Watford
According to the Irish Mirror, Tottenham are interested in signing £35million-rated Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure as a replacement for Victor Wanyama.
The 25-year -old Frenchman has also attracted interest from the likes of PSG, Liverpool and Arsenal for his consistent performances in the heart of Watford’s midfield this season. (h/t Irish Mirror)
The former French U21 international made his move to the Premier League with Watford from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes in the winter of 2016.
However, he was loaned out to La Liga club Granada CF for the remainder of the season and made his debut in the 2016-17 season.
Although he made only 23 appearances in his first season, he played a more significant role in the following season, making 37 appearances in the Premier League and scoring 7 goals. He was awarded Watford’s Player of the Season award for the 2017-18 season.
And he has taken off from where he had left last season. Doucoure has played every minute of Watford’s Premier League campaign this term, establishing a healthy partnership with Etienne Capoue in the heart of the midfield. The 25-year-old has been one of the cornerstones of Watford’s early-season success, contributing with four assists.
Meanwhile, Spurs have made a decent start to the season. With 21 points from 10 games, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are placed 5th in the standings, just a point behind north London rivals Arsenal.
Pochettino did not show much intent in the summer transfer window and Spurs embarked on the ongoing season without a single new signing. It all began all for the Lilywhites as they won their first three games but a dip in form saw them suffer defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Watford.
Truth be told, Spurs have lost both their games against the top six sides in the Premier League. A 2-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool was followed by a 1-0 loss to Manchester City at home. Furthermore, they lost 4-2 to Barcelona and 2-1 to Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Much of their woes against the big teams have been down to the lack of depth in their squad. Lack of new recruitments in the summer has hit the team hard. Quite clearly, Pochettino did not have enough options on the bench to cover for the injuries to Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen.
Vincent Wanyama was fielded in the Champions League tie against Barcelona but the Kenyan looked way off the pace against the Spanish giants. It doesn’t look like Pochettino is very keen to use him in central midfield as he has given him only a couple of starts this season.
As things stand, Spurs need to bring in some reinforcements to bolster their midfield options and Abdoulaye Doucoure is definitely a good choice.
The 25-year-old might not be the most technically gifted midfielder but is very effective with his physicality, game-reading, aerial prowess and work rate.
He would be a good addition to the squad alongside the likes of Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Mousa Dembele. Dembele might be on his way out of the club in January or next summer, something that should further prompt the manager to make a move for Abdoulaye Doucoure.

That said, Spurs should not hesitate to splash the cash to sign the Frenchman in January. It might be the move that propels them to greater heights in the Premier League.
