Tottenham should begin a January pursuit to sign this fiery 20-year-old Italian attacker and here’s why

Nicolo Zaniolo was linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer but remained at AS Roma

Nicolo Zaniolo is one of the rising stars in the Serie A. The 20-year-old has broken into the AS Roma first-team and is a regular for the U21 Italy side.

The attacker can play in several positions in the final third and was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer (h/t Calciomercato).

The Italian remained at Roma this season but Tottenham need to make a move for the 20-year-old in January.

Spurs need more options in the attack

Tottenham’s start to the Premier League has been a mixed bag. They picked up four points from the opening three games but the surprising result was the 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle United.

Spurs looked out of sorts against the Magpies and despite having 80% of the possession and even starting Son Heung-min.

Harry Kane, surprisingly, doesn’t look as sharp as he did in the pre-season where he scored some belters while Erik Lamela has had his ups and downs.

Lucas Moura could be the saviour if he gets more games but the Brazilian didn’t look great in the Newcastle clash.

Then comes Christian Eriksen. The Dane is out of a contract at the end of the season and Mauricio Pochettino admitted that his side is unsettled (h/t Football.london).

Spurs have signed Giovani Lo Celso to possibly replace the Dane but someone like Zaniolo would provide a lot of quality out wide.

The winger is one of the brightest players in the Serie A and can also play in an attacking midfielder’s role.

Pochettino has worked well with young players throughout his managerial career and signing Zaniolo in the winter window would be a smart move, especially if Spurs lose out on Eriksen.

Tottenham aren’t playing with natural wingers currently as Pochettino explores a 4-3-1-2 formation, but Zaniolo would do a great job just behind the pair of attackers too.

Verdict

Lo Celso could turn out to be a great signing for Spurs but they need more options on the bench or to mix their starting line-ups a bit.

Zaniolo seems set to become a star in the coming years and Tottenham could be the perfect destination for the Italian.
